Mavis Deloris Kirkland

Mavis Deloris “Big Mama” Kirkland born on October 28, 1932 in Fayetteville, Alabama to the late Johnnie M. Kirkland.

She attended East Highland Elementary School.

At an early age she joined the Friendship Baptist Church and later moved her membership to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. As a member at Mt. Zion she served as president of the missionary, president of the choir, and president of the usher board. She was Sunday school teacher and Chairman of the kitchen committee. She served faithfully in many other capacities until her illness.

Mavis Deloris “Big Mama” Kirkland was the proud mother of five, four sons and one daughter. Her daughter Barbara Ann McKenzie preceded her in death. 

Mavis Deloris “Big Mama” Kirkland departed her life on May 6, 2013 at Coosa Valley Medical Center.

She leaves to cherish her sweet memories: four sons: Robert (Irene) Kirkland and Pastor Frederick (Cynthia) Kirkland both of Childersburg, AL, Christopher (Debra) Kirkland and Phillip Anthony (Terita) Kirkland both of Sylacauga, AL, sixteen grandchildren, fifty-three great grand children, one brother: William (Mary) Kirkland of Virginia Beach, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
