WHEN I'M GONE
Samuel “Sammy” McGhee was born in Sylacauga, AL on February 21st, 1951 to the late
Walker McGhee and Suluria Oden McGhee. He was preceded in death by his only child Samuel
Wade Barefield and siblings: Vallie Mae Larkin, Felix McGhee, Bobby McGhee, Amanda
McGhee, Margarette McGhee, and Obie McGhee.
Sammy was in his residence on Sunday, June 2, 2024 when he answered the Masters call and
transitioned to his eternal home. His confession and belief in Jesus Christ as his Lord and
Savior allowed him to be at peace throughout the various issues that he encountered along this
life’s journey on his way home.
Sammy found joy and peace when he could escape and go fishing. He enjoyed the outdoors and
you would see him sitting on the front porch enjoying the sounds of God’s creation. He was a
jack of all trades and master of some (maybe none) . He was not easily persuaded and would
stand firm, even if letting go would have been a wiser option. He loved working with his hands
and could repair almost anything, especially cars. His God given gifts and work history
included: installing carpet/vinyl, servicing/repairing cars, carpentry, and electrical work. He
retired from the Talladega Board of Education where he worked as a custodian at Childersburg
Middle School.
The wonderful memories made during Samuel’s life will always be cherished by his wife, Debra
Williams McGhee; grandsons, Samuel Wade Mullins and Jacob Orion Polk (Asia); great
grand children: Antonio Wade Mullins; Jaiden, A’nyla, Dominic, Braylen and Diamond Polk;
sister: Silister McGhee of Rumulus, MI, brother-in laws: Willie J. Williams (Mary) and Billy
Ray Powell; sister-in-laws: Juril Logan, Mary Bellamy, Anna Carlisle (Bobby), Nyline
Coleman (Larry), Margret Williams, Gwendolyn Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
